A Hero Honored, A Mission Continued

· Courtney Askren

We’re proud to share that our sponsored service dog, Corey, graduated from training with Mission Working Dogs in Maine on October 25th and is now living with his veteran recipient. Corey’s journey represents dedication, resilience, and a mission of service, values shared by both his namesake and the veteran he now supports.

Corey was named in honor of Army Sgt. Corey E. Garver, a 26-year-old from Topsham, Maine, who made the ultimate sacrifice while serving in Afghanistan. Sgt. Garver was killed in action on June 23, 2013, when enemy forces attacked his unit in Paktiya Province. A member of the 1st Battalion, 506th Infantry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division, Sgt. Garver is remembered by friends and family as a man of purpose, courage, and selflessness, someone who turned his life around and devoted it to serving others.

By naming this service dog Corey, Mission Working Dogs hoped to keep Sgt. Garver’s spirit of service alive. Today, Corey is doing just that, providing comfort, support, and independence to a veteran who served our country, just as Sgt. Garver once did.

A friend of Sgt. Garver’s once said of him, “He wouldn’t have wanted to go any other way. To die doing something so selfless is an honorable way to go.” We believe that spirit of selflessness lives on through Corey, continuing the mission of service, healing, and hope.

Mission Working Dogs is an incredible nonprofit organization dedicated to training service dogs to assist individuals with disabilities, including veterans with PTSD and mobility challenges. Their work transforms lives, creating lasting partnerships built on trust, confidence, and independence.

We’re honored to support their mission and encourage others to learn more about their inspiring work. To read more about Mission Working Dogs, donate, or explore how to sponsor a service dog, visit www.missionworkingdogs.org.
